They’re a fond memory for many of us, but did you know how easy it was to make homemade sloppy joes with ingredients you probably already have? When I tell you that this recipe is a perfect replica of the ones we grew up eating, I’m not kidding.
- 16 oz ground meat*
- 2 T flour
- 2 T brown sugar
- 2 T chopped onion
- 2 T chopped green pepper
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 T yellow mustard
- 8 burger buns
*I often add lentils to the ground meat to bulk up a recipe while adding fiber and protein. It doesn’t affect the flavor at all.
- Add ground meat, onion, and green pepper to a pan and saute until meat is browned. Drain if necessary and return to the pan.
- Add flour and stir until fully incorporated.
- Add remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Helpful Tips
I often buy ground meat when it’s deeply discounted, usually because the sell by date is close. Then it’s easy to divide the meat, onion, and peppers into freezer bags so they’re ready to go right into the pan. Likewise, the finished Sloppy Joe mixture can be portioned and frozen after you’ve cooked it for quick reheating anytime.
